The Ukrainian armed forces reported that 610 artillery shells were fired near Avdiivka in the last 24 hours.

"The enemy launched massive offensive actions yesterday with the support of armored vehicles in the directions of Avdiivka and Mariinka," an official spokesman for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Stupun, told Ukrainian television.

"The fierce fighting continues. Our fighters are holding their defences firmly," the Ukrainian military officer added.

Avdiivka, which lies northwest of the city of Donetsk currently controlled by the Russian army, has for several months been one of the major fronts in the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian war, as the Russians have been frantically trying to seize it.

A new attempt to take over Avdiivka started almost two months earlier. Since then, Russian forces have made slow but steady progress towards encircling the city, but have lost large numbers of men and equipment in their efforts.

According to the British Ministry of Defence, the fiercest fighting on the front line in the last week of the war has been in Avdiivka. In the latest British intelligence briefing, the British Ministry of Defence said that "as conveyed in public data from official Ukrainian sources, some days 40% of all armed clashes take place in this small sector. Russian attacks continue and consist mainly of infantry attacks, often by Storm-Z units."

"Ukrainian units have probably performed some successful local counterattacks, preventing Russian forces from taking full control of the village of Stepovoe. From here the Russians are trying to encircle Avdiivka and its heavily fortified industrial zone," the British spies added.

In addition to Avdiivka, there is evidence that Moscow is also targeting the village of Sinkovka. Reports from Ukrainian military officials describe that offensive groups of Russian armed forces are in the area around the village and are ready to take over the settlement in order to block the town of Kupiansk in the Kharkiv region.

Finally, we should add that shortly after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that he will run for president again in the upcoming presidential elections, Moscow said that these elections will also be held for the first time in the new regions of Donetsk, Lugansk, Zaporizhzhya and Kherson, which the Russians recently occupied and annexed.
