What Dendias and Güler agreed on the Mitsotakis-Erdoğan meeting

The meeting between the Greek Minister of National Defence Nikos Dendias and his Turkish counterpart Yasar Güler at the Armed Forces Officers' Club was held in a very positive atmosphere.

Yassar Güler arrived with... "British" precision at 11:30 at the Athens Armed Forces Officers Club, where Nikos Dendias greeted him with a warm handshake on the landing before they entered the interior.

It was Güler's second time in Athens as the first was two years ago, before he became a minister, at the NATO Chiefs of Armed Forces Meeting.

It was the second time he saw Nikos Dendias up close as minister as the previous one was at the recent NATO Defence Ministers' Meeting.

The Greek minister had the upper hand in the discussions with his Turkish counterpart, as his previous experience in the Foreign Ministry had armed him with knowledge of all aspects of the issues on the table.

The discussion, which took place in a good atmosphere, lasted for an hour. Nikos Dendias bid him farewell with an equally warm handshake.

The Turkish minister reiterated his invitation to the Greek minister for a joint visit to the earthquake-affected areas of Turkey.

It is certainly not possible to speak of the beginning of a friendship between the two men as in the case of Dendias and Cavusoglu, but there is certainly the beginning of a mutual appreciation.

The most important thing that was agreed upon was to maintain calm on the ground between the two countries.

The two Ministers endorsed the Confidence Building Measures activities from the 2010 list, which were agreed in principle during the recent meeting of the two delegations in Ankara.

More specifically, the following was approved

  • Telephone line between the Larissa ESCAE - Eski Shehir.
  • Organization of sports events,
  • Exchange of visits of military delegations

Mr. Dendias and Mr. Güler also exchanged views on the security situation in the wider region.

"Our Minister is accompanying our President's visit to Athens today in the framework of the 5th High Level Cooperation Council held between Turkey and Greece" was the only mention so far by the Turkish Ministry of Defence through its spokesman Zeki Akturk during the regular press briefing.

On the Greek side there was an informal briefing that stated: "The meeting of the Ministers of Defence of Greece and Turkey, Nikos Dendia and Yasar Güler, took place in a positive atmosphere today, Thursday, November 7, 2023, at the Armed Forces Officers Club in Athens, in the framework of the Supreme Cooperation Council of the two countries.
