Mitsotakis: The Russian economy has proved to be very resistant to sanctions - Russia is the second largest supplier of LNG to Greece

The statements of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Davos are highlighted in the Russian press.

"The Russian economy has proved to be more resistant to sanctions than the West thought," Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in a conversation with Foreign Policy editor-in-chief Ravi Agrawal at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

On sanctions, the Russian economy has proved more resilient than we thought. But that doesn't mean Russia hasn't paid a heavy price in terms of the economy. And I think that the economy in a war essentially misses the long-term opportunities for this country to get back on the path of stable growth," Mitsotakis said.

That's why we insist on these sanctions. This is the only financial instrument we have at our disposal and we have to make more efforts and do more to make these sanctions work," the prime minister said.

Russia in second place for LNG supply to Greece

Russia ranked second in LNG supplies to Greece in liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies to Greece in 2023, slightly behind the United States, the operator of the Greek gas transmission system National Natural Gas System Operator said.

LNG imports to Greece from Russia amounted to 8.38 TWh, while the United States supplied 10.75 TWh, Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported.

The main point of gas supply to Greece was the Revithoussa LNG terminal, which provided 43.55% of all imports.

Egypt, Algeria, Algeria, Norway, Nigeria and Spain also supplied gas to Greece, National Natural Gas System Operator said.

Cumulative gas imports amounted to 67.71 TWh, down 21.41% from 86.16 TWh in 2022.
This information shows that Greece is dependent on Russia for LNG supply, largely because we have not yet started to implement extraction in our own fields.

If we start the whole process today south of Crete and in the Ionian Sea, we will get the first results in 4-5 years, and that tells us a lot about the importance of the speed we need to develop.

Recall that in the space of 12 months, LNG exports from Russia to Greece increased 4.5 times and reached 662 thousand tons, the Russian newspaper Vedomosti reports, citing statistics from Kpler analysts.

Apart from Greece, India and Turkey have become some of the main importers of Russian LNG.
Last year, a total of 432 thousand tons of this type of fuel were shipped to Greece (a 1.5-fold increase compared to 2022).

At the same time, Turkey, like Greece, is a member of the North Atlantic military-political bloc.
In general, the above countries are countries that have been increasing imports of Russian LNG, the analysts concluded.
