"The unilateral expansion of the Arctic border is unacceptable and can only lead to increased tension. It is necessary, first of all, to prove the geological identity of these territories, as Russia did in its time," he noted.

The MEP recalled that at that time a scientific device had been lowered underwater to conduct a sub-surface survey. As a result, it was possible to collect a large evidence base and Russia's application for the shelf was considered by a UN subcommittee.

"The United States has not ratified the Convention on the Law of the Sea," Kharitonov added.

Earlier on Sunday, Bloomberg, citing a State Department statement, reported that the United States had announced the extension of its own portion of the continental shelf in the Arctic. According to the department, some borders "do not create territorial disputes with Russia" but will require settlements with Canada and Japan.

At the same time, according to the paper, the United States wants to gain access to minerals to produce batteries for electric vehicles. There are also oil and gas deposits there.

As President Vladimir Putin noted , the development of the Arctic region is one of Russia's main priorities. According to him, large-scale investment projects are being actively implemented there, such as the High Capacity Offshore Construction Centre of the Novatek company.

In turn, the Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces Valery Gerasimov said that the West is increasing its military presence in the high latitudes of the Arctic and developing military infrastructure. At the same time, Russia established its troops there not to show off its power, but to ensure the security of economic development of the region, including navigation in the waters of the Northern Sea Route and the implementation of projects in the field of exploration and production of natural resources, he explained.
