The fall of Marinka is devastating for the Ukrainians - Their entire line of defence is "torn down"

The war in Ukraine continues with particular ferocity, with the Russians achieving a major victory, "liberating" the Marinka region adjacent to Donetsk.

Marinka was not only an important fortified area for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, but also a strategic point, the capture of which will have serious consequences for the continuation of the war, as it opens the way for Russian troops.

The capture of Marinka puts the city of Donetsk out of the range of Ukrainian artillery

According to Russian Deputy Minister of Defense Soygoo, Russian troops are in full control of the town of Marinka, southwest of Donetsk, which will significantly reduce the ability of the Ukrainian armed forces to hit Donetsk with artillery fire, which has been repelled.

From the centre of Donetsk, Marinka is about 20km away.

As Russian sources report, "Marinka, which was home to about 10,000 thousand people until 2014, then remained in Ukraine and several attempts to liberate it by Donetsk militia forces in 2015-2016 failed.

Throughout these nine years, the Armed Forces of Ukraine reinforced it with all available means, making it a literal fortress town, with its houses all organized for defense.

As a result of the above, it was possible to report the complete liberation of Marinka only after the last two houses on Ivan Franko Street in the north-west of the city were taken.

The Ukrainians retreat and regroup further west in Kurakhovo

Ukrainian troops have retreated west towards Georgievka and are gradually beginning to reinforce it. Kurakhovo follows, which is also a fortified settlement, but not as strong as Marinka.

Kurakhovo has always been the supply base of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and now they are trying to turn it into a frontline position in a hurry.

At the same time, the Ukrainian Armed Forces were expecting Russian troops to move in this direction.

However, the Russian Armed Forces have changed their plan and now pressure is being exerted south of Marinka, where the Ukrainian fortified area in the village of Pombeda is located.

A little earlier, the Russian Armed Forces liberated the so-called Pitomnik, another fortified area belonging to the Maryinsk defence zone.

At the same time, fighting is taking place in the Novomikhailovka industrial zone, a settlement to the south towards Ugledar.

A chain of small settlements is spread out there.

This chain towards Konstantinovka covers both Ugledar and the entire flank of the Ukrainian group previously involved in the attempted 'counter-attack.

The significance of the Russian capture of Marinka

In other words, the liberation of Marinka is not a local episode of occupation of a single city.

Apart from the fact that it employed large Russian forces that could be used elsewhere, Marinka is a key city that opens a Russian axis of attack that separates two (2) large groups of Ukrainian Armed Forces forces.

At the same time, the reinforcement in terms of supplies - personnel and armor for the Ukrainian Armed Forces is already severely limited.

The liberation of Marinka is not only a special symbolic event for the people of Donetsk.

The elimination of such a large defensive line of the Ukrainian Armed Forces once again changes the configuration of the contact line with the front moving further and further away from the old contact line.

Most importantly, new operational-tactical possibilities are now emerging for the Russian military.

The latest military successes such as the capture of Marinka and the possible capture of Anviivka are creating "holes" in the main Ukrainian line of defence that are too difficult for their army to close.
