The State Department has approved the sale of NASAMS anti-aircraft systems to Ukraine

The State Department has approved the sale of an advanced NASAMS anti-aircraft system to Ukraine. As everything shows in the last period of time, Russia's repeated missile attacks in Kiev and elsewhere forced the Ukrainian government to seek air defense weapons from the US. In this context approval was given.

The relevant announcement states:

“The State Department has decided to approve a potential Foreign Military Sale to the Government of Ukraine of a National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS) and related equipment for an estimated cost of $285 million. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency submitted the required certification by notifying Congress.

The Government of Ukraine has requested to purchase the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS), which includes: one (1) AN/MPQ-64F1 Sentinel radar; A Fire Distribution Center (FDC) is also included. canister launchers, secure communications, GPS receivers, code loaders and cable sets, tool kits, test equipment? support equipment, prime movers, generators, technical manual, spare parts. US Government and contractor technical support and other related logistics and program support elements. The total estimated cost is $285 million.

This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by enhancing the security of a partner country that is a force for political stability and economic progress in Europe.

Ukraine urgently needs to increase its defense capabilities against Russian missiles and aircraft. Acquiring and effectively deploying this capability will enhance Ukraine's ability to defend its people and protect critical national infrastructure.

The proposed sale of this equipment and support will not change the basic military balance in the region.

The prime contractor will be Raytheon Missiles and Defense, Tucson, AZ. No known offsetting agreements have been proposed in connection with this potential sale.

Implementation of this proposed sale will not require the assignment of additional US Government representatives or contractors to Ukraine.

There will be no adverse impact on US defense readiness as a result of this proposed sale.

This notice of potential sale is required by law. The description and dollar value are for the highest estimated quantity and dollar value based on original requirements. Actual dollar value will be lower depending on final requirements, budget authority and signed sales agreements, if and when they are entered into.
