Sweden's membership of NATO has been the subject of tough negotiations between the US and Turkey. How the White House used the F-35 issue to put pressure on Turkey.

Given Turkey's new delay to Sweden's NATO membership, Washington is trying to find a formula to decouple the sale of the F-16s from the F-35s and move forward with the sale of the fighters to Greece.

According to information that has not yet been confirmed, Anthony Blinken's tour in the coming days will include Turkey, in another attempt to convince Erdogan to complete Sweden's accession procedures once the National Assembly opens in mid-January.

If that does not happen, the Americans intend to formally notify Congress of the sale to Greece even if such a development causes discontent in Ankara.

Blinken, after all, has warned his Turkish counterpart, Hakan Fidan, that this is something that will happen if Turkey continues to break its promises in relation to Sweden.

Extension to July 2024 goes to Sweden's accession

"Stockholm has kept its commitments to Ankara", says Stoltenberg

For a year now, Sweden's NATO membership has been going ... month by month. This time NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg is confident that Sweden will join the military alliance by July at the latest.

The next NATO summit will take place in Washington from 9 to 11 July and the Nordic country will be a full member by then, Stoltenberg told the German DPA.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan wants the Swedish government to act against members of the Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK) on its territory and is using his veto power to get F-16 fighter jets from the US.

In late December, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said there was "little willingness" from Hungarian lawmakers to approve Sweden's offer.

A few days later, the Turkish parliament's foreign affairs committee gave its approval for Sweden's membership of the alliance after months of stalling. The general assembly of the chamber must now give the final go-ahead.

Stockholm has kept its commitments to Ankara and made concessions, Stoltenberg said, Politico reported.
