Greek-Turkish rapprochement with a joint exercise off Lebanon and a dispute east of Karpathos

After Erdogan's visit to Athens and the expectations it created for many, Greece and Turkey seem to be entering a new era, in which no one expects Ankara to change its revisionist agenda.

It is probably in the context of this new era that the Armed Forces are also trying to adapt. So off the coast of Lebanon, Greece and Turkey have engaged in a joint naval exercise! They even exchanged souvenirs, according to a post of the Turkish Ministry of Defence!

The post reads, "Our corvette TCG BÜYÜKADA, which participated in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) mission, conducted training with the Greek Naval Forces HS NAVARINON element.

As part of the training, which took place in the Lebanese approach waters, a commemorative item was given as a gift via a postal bag."

At the same time that this was happening off the coast of Lebanon, of course, Turkey showed that it has not changed its revisionist doctrine at all, as we said at the beginning of the article.

So, while Greece reserved an area southeast of Karpathos for a British Navy exercise for today, Turkey reacted by claiming that the area is its own jurisdiction!

At the same time, two exercises conducted by the Greek Armed Forces show that Greece is now one of the favorite training grounds of the American Armed Forces and even with objects that the Greek Armed Forces have never encountered before.

Last Wednesday 06 December 2023, and in the context of the military cooperation actions planned by the General Staff, a joint training exercise between the Armed Forces (AF) and the AC-130 Gunship of the United States took place in the wider maritime area northwest of Crete and east of the Peloponnese!

It should be noted that Gunship aircraft action is appropriate in areas where there is no opposing air force and the target is mainly rebel groups with poor to non-existent anti-aircraft weapons.

In the co-training from the Greek side according to the relevant announcement of the General Staff participated: "From the Air Force, 1 pair of F-4 fighter jets in escort and Close Air Support  missions. From the Navy, personnel of the Submarine Disaster Command (SDC) with 1 MARK V Unorthodox Warfare Rapid Deployment Vessel (MARK-V).

From the Joint Special Warfare Command, 1 Joint Terminal Attack Controller and personnel with 1 Fast Boat.

In the course of the exercise, fire was carried out by the AC-130 Gunship, with the JTAC team demonstrating, at the KARAVIA FIRING FIELD.

The training is part of the overall planning of the General Staff of the Hellenic Armed Forces in terms of military cooperation activities between Greece and the United States, and contributed to the increase of combat capability, as well as to the improvement of the level of understanding and interoperability between the Greek and American participating Armed Forces".

"On Friday 08 December 2023, an event was held in the wider area of H.E.S., in the area of the "H.E.S.". On Friday, 2023, an operational training with the participation of units and means of the 71 Airborne Brigade "PONTOS", the 1st Army Aviation Brigade "KILKIS LAHANA" and the 12th Combat Aviation Brigade of the United States. The co-training included the examination of numerous operational items and procedures, such as planning and conducting airborne operations in cooperation with transport and attack helicopters.

This activity was conducted as part of the grid of international cooperation with friendly and allied countries planned by the Joint Chiefs of Staff and helped to promote the level of operational readiness, combat capability and cooperation of the trainee units of both countries."
