The Greek equipped drone "Grypas" and the Turkish UCAVs in the role of "aerial artillery" in the Aegean Sea

The well-known news agency Defense News refers to the construction of the first Greek equipped unmanned aerial vehicle named "Grypas", as the first notable effort in our country in this field, but due to the existence of the Turkish UCAV fleet, it is like a drop in the ocean .

According to the same media, it is a multi-purpose system equipped with weapons for combat missions, and this is exactly what makes the difference with all the rest.

Greece has announced its first home-made combat drone, GRYPAS, with the initial unmanned aircraft expected by 2025.

In September, the Hellenic Aerospace Industry in collaboration with the Universities of Aristotle, Thessaly and Democritius presented Greece's first national drone, ARCHYTAS, which was advertised as the first aerial system from a range of unmanned technologies.

The GRYPAS drone, announced on January 13, is the second platform born from this joint production.

While the development of the drone will follow a very similar pattern to the ARHYTAS drone, its design will be based on a different concept of operations to meet different combat mission requirements.

While ARCHYTAS is intended for reconnaissance and surveillance over Greek islands, the GRYPAS drone will serve as a multipurpose system equipped for combat missions.

Mr. Nikos Koklas, director of research, planning and new programs at HAI, told Defense News via email on January 24, 2022.

"In the case of GRYPA, the aircraft itself and the payload will be significantly larger with a more modular design."

The first phase of the GRYPAS program is to be completed within the next two years, by 2025, and a scaled version will be produced.

The first customer of the GRYPAS drone will be the Greek Armed Forces.

Once operational, the Greek military could likely deploy them at the newly upgraded Larissa airbase, which is the headquarters of the Heron and Pegasus II UAV squadrons," the news agency concluded.

Turkey and its hypochthonic plan in the Aegean

At the same time, the Turkish have indulged in a race to build offensive unmanned aerial vehicles, but also other types, with a single purpose in the event of a Greek-Turkish conflict, that of targeting critical Greek facilities, without the "brawl" of the powerful Greek Air Force ( if this would of course be possible for them).

How do they want to achieve this?

Turkey is building, having already doubled their production, drones and UCAVs, capable of dropping rockets and aerial bombs with precision and from a safe distance, outside of the engagement envelope of the Greek anti-aircraft umbrella (according to Turkish experts), as long as Greek fighter aircraft will be busy with Turkish or they will be on the ground, according to a website on social networks.

This concerns "we will come one night suddenly", repeated by the Turkish political leadership led by President R.N.Erdogan.

The same website states that "Turkey is creating a peculiar aerial artillery which will be a headache for the Greek EDs, both in terms of tracking during a flight duration of 25+ hours and also in distinguishing the targets from its side".

The fleet of Turkish unmanned aerial vehicles will very likely have the main mission of destroying critical infrastructure for our country, in every scenario that we will have to consider in the Aegean, for this reason the information about the Greek electronic warfare grid should be the our first priority, together with the construction of a sufficient number of Greek UCAVs, which will certainly take care of our hands.
